The FAA as well as International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) defines an airplane upset as an event that unintentionally exceeds parameters normally experienced during flight. An upset can include extreme up or down pitch, extreme bank angle, or airspeeds inappropriate for the conditions (too slow or too fast).

It is a fact that, faces with an upset, an untrained pilot may exacerbate the situation, resulting in Loss of Control (LOC) event.

The goal of Upset Recovery and Prevention Training (UPRT) is to give you essential tools:

  • To recognize factors and conditions that may lead to an upset
  • To develop solid Aviation Decision Making (ADM) that minimize the risk of upsets
  • To develop standard recovery techniques for recovering from an upset

In short, by combining awareness and avoidance with practiced recovery skills, UPRT allows a pilot to convert a potentially catastrophic surprise into a manageable, non-event.

The Enhanced Flight Instruction Upset Recovery and Prevention Training (UPRT) course is offered in several variants, from a one day introductory course to a multi-day comprehensive course. UPRT courses include the following:

  • Approximately 2.5 hours of ground training
  • Thorough preflight briefs
  • One or more flights in our beautiful America Champion Super Decathlon
  • Post-flight debrief
  • An optional flight in the aircraft you normally fly, to practice URPT concepts learned in the aerobatic aircraft

Testimonials

I spent two days doing Upset Recovery and emergency training. If you remember nothing else about my comments, remember this: Every pilot needs to have the upset recover training in their tool belt! Not only did it boost my confidence about unusual attitudes, but only after two days I felt comfortable enough to take the controls and get out of whatever unusual attitude Brian put us in.

I took … one-day upset recovery training program and couldn’t recommend it more highly. As a TBM 960 owner, I found the structure and content to be both practical and eye-opening… This training was worth every minute and should be on every serious pilot’s checklist.
